Organization for Co-operation Between Railways (OSJD)

 

OSJD (Организация сотрудничества железных дорог) is an international railway organisation including  European and Asian ministries curating railway transport.

OSJD has 25 member states and covers 36.4 million square kilometers in Europe and Asia and 276468 km of railways (according to 01.01.2003).

OSJD observer members are Germany, France, Finland, Greece and Yugoslavia. Railway transit between OSJD member states is being regulated by several international agreements and contracts which Estonia has also joined:

  • The Agreement on International Goods Transport by Rail (SMGS) - from 1993;
  • Agreement on International Passenger Transport by Rail (SMPS) - from 1993;
  • Agreement on joining Dictionary/rules for use of railway vehicles in international traffic (PPV) - from 1993;
  • Agreement on joining Uniform Transit Tariff (ETT) - from 1993;
  • Agreement on joining International Transit Tariff (MPT) - from 1993.

OSJD mainly focuses on formalizing and improving the standard legal base of rail transport services, arranging co-operation on railway exploitation and technological development for expanding international railways even further.

OSJD is led by committee currently located in Warsaw. Decisions are made on the session of Council of Ministers, technical issues and suggestions are handled by the Conference of Railway Directors.
