Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail (UIC)

The UIC is an international railway organization founded in 1922 to promote rail transport at world level and meet the challenges of mobility and sustainable development. The standards and practices created by UIC have found use around the world and today the organization includes 72 active members, 59 associated members and 33 observer members. The organization has created a vast amount of technical documentation within the years, which has found use in developing and using railway infrastructure and rolling stock.

In November, 2004 the UIC Council decided to renew organizational structure and strategies as it was deemed necessary due to shifting circumstances on railway market and implementation on legislation concerning the joint operation of railways developed by Council of the European Union. Primary tasks are still improving the co-operation between member states and unifying railway system in general.  Main areas where UIC sees their importance are

  • developing railway infrastructure and its management
  • joint functioning and safety
  • standardizing and
  • strategic questions concerning railways.

UIC also deems important to participate in developing the viewpoints of unions of European railway and infrastructure companies, like CER (Community of European Railways) and EIM (European Infrastructure Managers).
